154lb. WBC Title Tournament

154lb. WBC Title Tournament

Recently the WBC has decided to do something about the lack of mandatories fought in the 154lb division. (in which Oscar De Hoya is the champion) To ratify this matter they have decided that it would be in the best interest of the fans to have a tournament. In which Oscar De La Hoya (36-2 29KO's), Shane Mosley (38-2 35KO's), Javier Castillejo (55-5 36KO's),Fitz Vanderpool (24-4 13KO's), and Fernando Vargas (22-2 20KO's) will participate.

The first fight of the tournament will be held on July 26, 2003, in which Fernando Vargas will do battle with Fitz Vanderpool. This initial fight, is pretty much a throw-away fight, giving Fernando Vargas an easy path to the second round.Granted Fitz Vanderpool has been #1 contender for quite some time but this just shows the inefficiency of the WBC to to properly rank fighters. Fitz Vanderpool's biggest "name" opponent was Hercules Kyvelos whom he fought 3 years ago, and lost might I add. So this initial fight (barring any SHOCKING upsets) is definitely a Victory for Fernando Vargas.

The next fight to take place will be Oscar De La Hoya vs. "Sugar" Shane Mosely. This is arguably one of the most intiguing fights to take place this year. With De La Hoya already having lost to Shane Mosely 3 years ago. Many people think Shane Mosley will take this fight much as he did the last time these 2 met. I personally don't think this will happen. Although I dont particularly care for Oscar De La Hoya, he look remarkable in his fight against Fernando Vargas, and he easily disposed of "Yory Boy" Campas (who wouldve thought). "Sugar" Shane on the other hand is coming off 2 losses to the recently dethroned Vernon Forrest, to move up to 154lbs. only to look horrendous against Raul Marquez, a fight which resulted
in a draw due to a cut on Marquez caused by a Mosley headbutt. In my opinion this fight (while most likely being a great fight showcasing both fighter boxing abilities) will go to Oscar De La Hoya, thus advancing him to the final round of the tourney.

The third fight of the tournament should feature Fernando Vargas challenging Javier Castillejo for the interim title and a guarenteed shot at Oscar in the final round of the Tourney. In my opinion this fight is also a throw-away for Fernando Vargas, although a tougher one than Fitz Vanderpool. Javier's biggest "name" opponent is Oscar De La Hoya to who Javier lost a 12 round Shutout unanimous decision loss. Again Fernando Vargas should arise victorious from this fight.

Thus bringing us to the final fight of the tournament, and in my opinion the fight the WBC is banking on. Oscar De La Hoya vs. Fernando Vargas. A rematch to 2002's "Bad Blood" fight (one of the years best fights). This fight will indeed be a money maker, and the WBC knows it. This fight will definitely spark the interest of avid boxing fans and the occasional watcher alike. The fight however can go to either fighter. Both being really good fighters, Oscar will surely not change the style and gameplan that won him the last fight, and Vargas will box as he did in the first 4 rounds of the first fight for the full fight. I personally will look for Vargas to revenge his loss, in a close 12 round decision. Perhaps sparking the need for a "rubberneck" rematch.

Every fight in this tournament will have its certain charms, but the obvious marquee fights being the Mosley v. De La Hoya fight, and the Vargas v. De La Hoya fight. Again this is assuming that my fight predictions are correct (which the most often are not). One thing I know for certain (well as certain as boxing can be) is that Fernando Vargas will be in the final round. I would love to see Fernando Vargas v. Shane Mosley. I think there styles would compliment each other nicely, and thus making a very good fight, not quite the money maker that a "Bad Blood 2" would make. Before I end this, I would just like to say how glad I am to be able to be able to discuss boxing with intelligently opinionated people as you all. I look forward to hearing responses and debates.

Comment hey guys. not much to report but the comments been a bit slow this weekend so i thought id start. i can't comment on the Dr K blowout as i never seen it but it seems orders has been restorded to Boxing Central and its good to see SAL and others are still posting. Theres some disturbing posts that have a pop at british and european fighters being not as good as american fighter which i agree with (lets face it our only P4P Lewis probably fell of the top ten)but I think its in poor taste to say such things. anyway im really excited bout Mayweather and Ndou fight as i've seen him fight(Ndou) a few time and think he has a punchers chance as much as the next opponent. Ndou was alarmingly stopped here in the UK by some domestic fighter but i understand he has improved. Last fight vs Yargas was impressive but he can be hit and he was wobbled on a couple of occasions en route to an impressive stoppage. anyway British fans what did you make of Benn Eubank fighting as gladiators? Benn was up for a tearup bigtime. To our american friends this was nothing more than a novelty but Eubank has taken off the Osbournes and is doing one called The Eubanks. Let you know how it pans out. Take care boxing fans Guy

Comment Hello everybody. I would just like to say thanks, and i'm truly honoured that SAL thinks that i can contribute to the website. Also to Necro well done for having the vision and foresight to start this website. I think we are all ageeed that boxing-central has turned into something that isn't worth comment ing on. I will see you all soon.

Comment That's a great potential matchup(winky vs. forrest). it would certainly tell a lot about where forrest is mentally after his two losses to mayorga. that could also be winky's best chance(assuming he wins) at gaining enough of a fanbase to demand a fight with mayorga, DLH, Mosley, or Vargas. if forrest wins, it would be a giant step toward geting his damaged confidence back. excellent comments DjNec. that would be a very tough matchup to pick a winner in. on one hand forrest may not have enough power at 154 to seriously hurt winky, and on the other hand winky has never fought such a skilled, tall, and rangy boxer like forrest. i would have to guess that forrest wins a very close split decision. anybody else have thoughts and/or predictions about this potential matchup?

Comment I don't think we will ever get to see a Trinidad v. De La Hoya rematch unfortunately, I read an interview with Tito's father who said that after Hopkins beat Trinidad Tito began slurring his speech and that was the reason for retirement. There are rumors of a Bad Blood 2 fight on Cinco De Mayo, 2004 That is where De La Hoya can really rake in the money. A Vargas v. Mosely fight is also a big possibility, but poor Winky will be left out in the cold because he just doesnt have the money drawing power that these 3 have. I think Mayorga has a better chance at fighting these guys than Winky does. But I do see Winky Wright fighting Vernon Forrest in 2004

Comment Mr G: I don't believe that winky will ever get his shot against DLH. the risk-reward factor is not great enough and beating winky would likely not raise DLH's status appreciably. opinions?

Comment Does anybody think Winky Wright will get his DLH fight? It seems hes been frozen out of the DLH Mosley Trinidad(when he was around) circle similar to how Mike McCallum was with Hagler Hearns Leonard and Duran. Although i never saw it a lot of people are saying he did in fact beat Vargas. Your opinions. Also Britsh fans remember to watch Benn Eubank 2 on Saturday on Channel 5 and Benn Eubank 3 Is on Sunday 9pm Channel 5 (This time theyre fighting as gladiators). By the way wheres everybody from in the uk im live near newcastle.

Comment Nuff respect to Djnecrogenic for getting this forum up and running. Boxing central has just got seriously wrecked as of late. Can't wait for DLH v Mosley. One of the very few up and coming fights where it's tough to pick a winner.

Comment i really do like the potential matchup between mosley and vargas, but i see a different scenario playing out(i hope, anyway). i think DLH will beat mosley and vargas will continue beating 2nd level opponents and they may meet each other for the right to a rematch with DLH. win or loss, i don't see too many more than four or five fights left in his career. let me explain: after the mosley fight(1) i see DLH taking 6-8 months off until his next matchup. this would likely be a campas type of fighter(2). he would then move onto vargas(or mosley(3)). assuming he wins this also, i believe he will end his career with a hopkins fight(4).(*assuming it can be worked out). the only other possibility i see is a tito fight(5) if he comes out of retirement and that's a big if. the point is: enjoy him while you can. opinions?

Comment Wow,I still cant believe I actually got this site running. There still are a little kinks that need to be ironed out (as evident with the post that is nothing but letters, that was put there by me to test a few things and I can't seem to figure out how to delete it.) But I just want to tell everyone that I am very honored to be a such a great group of opinionated people (I mean that in a good way)

Comment Well, its up and running at last, and it definatly looks like it was worth he wait! I'm a British fan who has recently started training in Wincobank, I can't think of anything to post right now other than to express my thanks to the guys who invited me here. Its a privilege and an honour!

Comment mr g. you could just wait until a couple of other articles get written so you can get a better idea of what to do. none of us are great writers, but we all have something good to contribute. that's the overall idea of this.

Comment like i said, you don't have to be a pro. if you'd like, you could write it and i'll be your editor. you would still have the chance to post whatever you want, but i could give you suggestions. i'd be happy to. and like i said, you couldn't do worse than champ!

Comment I've never written an article for a web site before but perhaps if the other guy from the UK would lend a hand i'll give it a go. Being British Calazaghe is like a national treasure and as such I need to loose some of my bias in order to complete the piece. Guy

Comment The creation of this community was a brilliant idea and I for one am most definitely honoured to be one of it's users, finally a place to debate boxing with individuals who all have the same enthusiasm for the sport and not having to endure all that anonymous nonsense aswell as a constant barrage of unnecessary personal insults all round which has ruined Boxing-Central. Just aslong as none of you diss Mr Audley Harrison I'm sure I'll get along well with you all - just kidding, such a topic of debate is one I'd welcome since it is open to so many perspectives. Dan/Des Troy PS: MR G, I am a fight fan from the UK also.

Comment Mr. G: how about writing an article outlining your views on calzaghe-ottke? we could post it next week and have a proper banter as your article would be a great place to start that debate. nobody should worry about their writing as it couldn't be any worse than ron miller, right?

Comment Hey guys thanks for this site and its nice to be in a forum where we dont have to sift through a load of crap to find comments that interest us. My name is Guy and i was wondering if there is anybody in this forum from the UK as im looking to have a bit of banter with like minded fans (god knows its hard to find anybody who knows the slightest bout the sport). Anyway ill check on this site later. By the way i'd love to restart the debate of Calzaghe vs Ottke (obviously hyperthetically as i'll beleive it when I see it). Also with reference with the above article I personally would like to see Mosely fight Vargas (if both are vicorious)as both have a lot to prove and its a fight for the fans for sure (too many F's). Cheers Guys

Comment Let me start by saying how happy i am very happy that this forum has become a reality. Thank you very much DjNecrogenic for posting the initial column and for all of your diligent work. You deserve most of the credit. As far as the article goes you are full of sh....... just kidding, i thought i was at box-central for a minute there. Seriously folks, please do not make any anonymous or personal comments toward anybody. that's the biggest rule and i am quite sure that we all agree with that. Disagreements are certainly encouraged as they often times foster a learning environment. Please do not notify anyone of this forum unless their name is submitted to me or djnec for consideration. the last thing we want to happen is what is happening on box-central. i have to also apologize for recently getting involved in all of that crap in there. in fact, it would be better not to even talk about it on box-central as some of those people would love to ruin our little boxing utopia. i feel once we get going full steam, we have such a wide array of intelligent fans with differing points of view, that this will be more beneficial than box-central. i thank all of you for your continued interest and patience as this entire project was being finalized. thanks again djnecrogenic for your time and hard work. lata, Sal.
